If you want to be a more successful franchisee, then start studying those that are where you want to be.  Find out which franchisees in your group are at the level you want to be at.  Find out how they did it, what they do now.

How do you do that?

Talk to them.  Take them out to lunch if they are close by.  If not, organise a phone or Skype session with them.  If you need to see hands on, then get on a plane and go see them (organise first of course!).

Remember that when you are learning from them, it is not always the big things that make someone successful.  Sometimes it is the little things.  It is their perspective or thought process.  It is who they hire or how they treat them.  It might be how they run their day.  It might be how they do certain tasks.  Don’t limit your questions to them on just what you think, ask them.

I know a lot of franchisees that are really successful and a big part of that is actually their family.  They have a spouse that is supportive and allows them to do what they need to do.  I know other franchisees that are successful because of their exercise routine or at least this plays a part in it.

I do suggest that when you are looking to talk to a franchisee that has the success you want that you find a franchisee that is more like you in personality.  I could send you to a franchisee that is polar opposite to you in personality and they will do and suggest things that simply won’t work for you, so instead of helping you, it will actually set you back in your growth path.

Remember also that you might go and talk to different franchisees for different things.  You might talk to one franchisee about marketing whilst a different one about organisation of their business.  Everyone has areas they are better at than others.

Talk to the franchisor if not sure who to talk to.  They will know who to suggest to you.  Remember also that the other franchisee is running a business too, so you need to make sure you work to their schedule.  Ask nicely and always thank them.  Don’t waste their time by going and talking to them and then not implementing anything they suggest.  Frustrating!  They will never help you again if you don’t take on at least some of their ideas because it will be just wasting their time and that is rude.   Also remember they are not their to be your therapist.  Don’t be negative, look for solutions and positive things to add to your business.  I can tell you right now, it is much easier to help someone that wants to be helped.  Don’t make it difficult for them to help you.

Other franchisees will be one of your greatest resources to help you be more successful in your business – and life!
