This is an analogy I use a lot in franchise training because this is probably the biggest mistake that franchisees make. Every franchisee will make this mistake at some time in their business and it is the biggest issue with franchising – sticking to the system.
Imagine every day, you get up and you have to walk half an hour to the shops. You go to the shops every day and buy several bags full of heavy groceries. You then have to walk the half an hour back home which will take you longer as it is hot and you also have several bags of heavy groceries. In fact, the plastic grocery bags cut into your hands and it is quite painful. You get home and you are exhausted, hot and hurting.
So you decide the best thing to do would to buy a car. You head to the shops and your buy this beautiful car that is safe, drives smoothly, it is all shiny and new, plus it has a huge space to carry items AND has air conditioning to make being out in the heat totally a pleasure.
You buy that car and you drive it home. You probably even stop off to show some of your friends and family telling them how brilliant your new car is and how it is going to make life so much easier than walking to and from the shops every day. You get that car home and put it in your garage and feel really proud of your purchase.
The next day rolls around and it is time to go to the shops for your daily grocery trip. You grab your keys and money, head out the door and start walking to the shops! Yes, you leave the car in the garage.
Madness, right?
The car is the franchise system. How many of you are walking out to do the work of the day in your business and you are leaving the system behind, even though it will make your day so much easier?
Stick to the system in a franchise. That is what you have invested your money in, that is what you were so proud of when you first purchased it, that is what is going to make even the day to day things much easier. Don’t leave the system sitting in the garage – use it!
