We all do it as business owners…. We hold onto our staff out of convenience rather than what is great for our business.

A member of your staff is not performing or on the other hand, they have outgrown their role and you have nothing else to offer them to progress.  Instead of going down the path of having to fire, hire, interview, onboard and train a new team member sometimes it is easier to go with ‘better the devil you know’.

But is this really helping your business?

Another thought is to also realise that an under performing staff member might just need some more training or even to realise that you simply care about them if they are going through a hard time.  Maybe they are not doing a role that works to their strengths?  An under performing staff member is not always because they are a bad person or lazy or don’t fit in, maybe you haven’t found a place for them, maybe they don’t have enough to do or they are not doing the things that will help them love their job.

Take a moment and do a staff audit.  Don’t look at your staff through the lens of who you want to fire, but through the lens of how can help this person be a more valuable member of my team?  How can I help this person as a person not a staff member?

Maybe you might just discover that you don’t have to do the whole fire, interview, onboard, train and pray they work out method after all…..
