In this world of the internet and social media, it is easier than ever to connect with people all over the world, but if you are doing your social media to help with the branding and marketing of your business, then maybe global domination is what you are really searching for.

To be honest, if you own a franchise business, then you are probably more concerned with your local community than that of the entire globe.

So why is it that when you do your social media, you are using tactics to gain global viewing rather than concentrating on your local audience?

Who cares if you have 1000 people from New York following you if you have a café in Broadbeach?  I’d rather 100, heck, I’d rather 10 people from Broadbeach following my social media.

So how do you focus on a local audience rather than international?

Here’s a couple of tips:

  • Use local hashtags, especially on Instagram. Do a search in your local suburbs and see which hashtags people are using locally.
  • Use the location function on your social media ALWAYS. This helps local people find you.
  • Remember to claim your Google Business location marker. More for SEO, but helps too!
  • Use images of local attractions, locations to supplement your posts on all social media. Don’t just make it about your business, talk about local landmarks as well (if you can get your brand in the photo even better!  If I had a café in Broadbeach, then I’d take a shot over looking the beach and in the foreground, have a branded take away coffee cup in the shot too!).
  • Follow other local businesses and LOCAL social media influencers.
  • Comment on other local businesses posts – not to promote your business, to show support to their business.
  • Tag in local businesses (where relevant)
  • Share stories/posts from customers when they tag you in their posts and also make meaningful comments/replies (not promotional) on their posts. A thank you for visiting us or doing business with us goes a LONG way!
  • Share local events or congratulate local sporting teams on their victories! Be a member of your community.  Share when local community groups are doing something worthwhile or ways you are adding to the community too.

So many things you can do, but just because you can get your social media in front of people all over the world for your business, sometimes the smartest thing to do is to get it in front of people that are within 10 km’s of your business!
